Frankenstorm Frights

Monday morning, rise at 630am get set- get ready and head into work for 830.  Today I didnt follow this routine.  Hurricane Sandy has caused Northeastern University to close for the day due to health and safety concerns, the MBTA shut down at 2pm this afternoon and we have grown close to cabin fever sitting in our apartment all day watching the wind blow and howl past on its ferocious path.

Luckily, or maybe perhaps unluckily our friend Saf had locked herself out of her flat and we have grown an extra roommate for the day.  We have made pancakes smothered in sugar, stawberrys, grapes and blackberrys.  Layered with numerous New Girl episodes, sprinkled with music and dancing- our day has flewww in.  Right now we're are chewing on carameled apples, with our eyes glued to the 90210 episode.

Living through Frankenstorm is definitely something I won't forget.  Just how lucky we are to have missed the full brunt of the storm, watching the news all day and seeing what people are having to deal with is something I will always remember.  It could of been a lot worse where I stay but thankfully we have missed the worse: http://science.time.com/2012/10/29/frankenstorm-why-hurricane-sandy-will-be-historic/


Lots of social media fake pictures were buzzing around the internet like a terrible plague.  No we were not living in a movie set, this was real life and these pictures just create hype that should be focused on real problems and worries and not silly little 'fish in the sea'.. .. .

Extra Events at work

I got to work two extra Saturdays at work, which at first sounds terrible as I'm loosing an extra days weekend to the normal person- but to me I thought this was a geat opportunity to try something new and experience areas of co-op that I hadnt yet had the chance to do so.

Northeasterns Open House- 22nd October.

I had been required to work this day within my co-op position with the International Admissions team in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  I was proud to arrive at 7am sharp and help the flock of families and prospective students around the campus and answer their eager questions.  Being privileged to work alongside all of the other knowledgeable admissions counselors and student recruitment team, I learned that team work is a must, and customer service goes a LONG way when introducing new clients to a business... .Everyone was so pleasant, and I have given my time to work at the next Open House coming up in November to continue to welcome all those interested futures to our prestigious campus.

On this day I even learned things about Northeastern that were new to me, how things worked- a lot of new staff members and their roles on the campus, and how everything rolled together behind scenes, to then reveal a marvelous red carpet of events throughout the day.

Northeasterns Parents Weekend - 29th October.

Today I was lucky enough to be asked from a different department to work during the Saturday of Parents Weekend.  Even though this day was not required for me to work, I certainly took the opportunity to again learn something new.  I was working with a whole new department, and met some inspirational characters and understood that so much hard work and preparation had taken part prior to this day.  I fortunately just got to reap working the final day where everything was again coming together like the cherry on top of the cake presentation.  Luckily I had to take part in a duck boat tour guide as the parents needed a 'guide' I obliged obviously, clearing my throat to bark out the most impressive QUACKS in the group. Families enjoyed many many NU events, from comedians, pumpkin dressups, BBQs, presentations and advice, guided tours around Boston and all its offerings in the compact wonderful city. I again met a bunch of lovely families who certainly enjoyed my 'exotic' accent from Scotland- funnily I was introduced to a Fathers family, whom had come from The University of Glasgow, grew up close to where I lived and is now a Director in the NY Bank of America.   The world is certainly full of many opportunities and paths, and today I learned that I have many choices to make- so far I made the best choice co-oping with Northeastern and I am so thankful and lucky to be here right now experiencing everything daily.

HUSKY pride

Wow- this weekend I have well and truly became a dieHARDhusky.  Well perhaps I haven’t become one yet, or completed enough dedication or love for the hairy crowd though I definitely have felt a part of the amazing Northeastern University spirit!

This week has been Homecoming week on campus, with lots of advertising on campus for voters to pick their favorites for Homecoming King and Queen, Community events, team activities bringing all the students together to one finale night of a Basketball showdown and cheerleading cheers and crowds supporting all that does NU PROUD.  This was my first experience seeing basketball taking place in front of me physically, it was a fun sport which I enjoyed watching slamDUNKS after slumDUNNNKS. Seeing the dance group and cheerleaders was the best as well, i secretly wish I could have joined in on the punching and kicking smiling and singing riling up the crowds!!  Seeing the King and Queen being crowned was pretty special as well, another first experience.  I wore full red and black attire to work on the Thursday to show our NU Husky Pride! 

LETS GO HUSKIES *clap clap clap*  the many many cheers and chants which I learned tonight was phenomenal.  Seeing the DOGhouse in all its bouncing buzzing glory, across from the GODhouse, Northeastern University students teamed up to show our rivals Boston College what we really had to give.  It was my first time at an ice-hockey game and BOY did I enjoy it.  The atmosphere in Mathews Arena was intense, and everyone viewing the chilly choppy game was truly intimidating.  I became warped in the game, screaming chants, waving arms and bouncing at the slightest hint of glory.  During a break from one of the periods we got on the ‘dance cam’ which is the big screens in the middle of the rink which is screened during the break showing the crowds shaking their best.  It was so much fun.  To top my first night watching the ice-hockey NU won the match.  We bet BC 3-1 and now I have read that we are now in the rankings at No. 14, which is grand since NU hasn’t made it into the top 20 rankings in three years. http://www.northeastern.edu/news/2012/10/mens-hockey-skates-into-national-rankings/

I’m positive I’m the good luck charm in the crowds, so I MUST attend future matches to help the scores rocket higher.  I ended the night by baking a beastly Apple Pie with Michelles freshly picked apples she got the day before on an apple farm outside of Boston.  It was truly scrumptious.

On the Sunday I walked with Northeastern University’s, The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) around the 5 mile walk for Making Strides against Breast Cancer!  We walked with many donors and volunteers who helped raise a total $1, 860, 436.21 for the massive cause, on the drizzly Sunday morning. We warmed our treaded trainers in the famous Cheers Boston Bar, dining with a pub Burger and some friendly chitterchatter.

Fashion&+&Fluff

 

Today, waking up with the most hurrendously annoying headache I stretched and moaned to my loving roomates that I just could not face the upcoming events of today.  With a lot of sympathy, tea and painkillers I manged to venture outside to the delightful crispy afternoon jumping on the bus to travel to Sommerville.  The weather wasn't terribly bad, it never rained (thunkfully), and I enjoy walking down the sidewalks crunching and ruffiling the little shirveld orange, brown and purple leaves below me.

The FLUFF festival was our first stop at Union Square within Somerville.  'What the Fluff' celebrates the creation of Fluff with this annual festival, offering games, singers, food and FLUFF. all in the name of the smooth,sticky,pasty, sweet yumminess that is FLUFF.

 

Enjoying a quick pick me up of a mint hot chocolate and coconut donut, we headed down towards Boylston to The Estate.  Presented by HerCampus.com and U by Kotex, College Fashion Week offered multiple on trend fashion suggestions for all those fashionista collegiiettes!  Students strutted down the catwalk with glee and confidence, whilst we the audience enjoyed the free goodies (college SURVIVAL kits), chips+dips and eye candy from the a cepella group The Dear Abbeys.

I will be offering my autograph to those who ask for it in the near future.

Last night we were lucky enough to be an involved in an exciting music video, my first ever visit into Fenway Park. An experience I won't forget, we shuffled up at 11pm to start and crowded with the many REDsoxx and Brian Evan fans to be apart for this opportunity.
"Brian Evans, the Boston singer-songwriter behind the Frank Sinatra-esque tune “At Fenway,” is shooting a video at the historic ballpark Tuesday, September 25, and the public is invited to attend and possibly be part of the project."
Yes I was there until the early hours of the morning, but yes I did get to experience something I would probably not get the chance to in the future.  Truly an amazing night/morning, plenty of chips and coffee kept us going along with the highlights of seeing William Shatner and Brian Evans hit some balls in the large 'grassy' holding.    I am hoping that they have an amazing shot of myself cheering or booing at the scenes, but as long as I know Im there, and got to experience that night- I'm quite content with the 'bragging cred'.

Splish, Splash SPLOSH.

Wow.

Myself and Molly took the Harbour Island Whale Watching cruise with BHC -BostonHarborCruises- during a lovely long summery day.

Luckily our tour ended up being 12noon until 5pm. I was delighted at this fact, as the mighty $35 ticket to go on the cruise was stretched out another two hours than what they estimate it will take.  I'm sure some families did not plan on being on the boat for this long, but for me I was in my total element.  

We viewed 7 humb back whales in their natural environment just off the coast, deep diving for their lunch, which consisted of a few tonne of fishes. It took some exploring to find them, as ofcourse you cant just easily throw a bone and watch them come skipping to you.  We were lucky enough to see a whale jump out of the water and do a whirl flip to deep dive back down to the sea.  Everyone was in awe, complete astonishment. Even the tour guide had mentioned how lucky our group had been to witness this, as it does not happen on every guide. (even if this wasnt true, and it happens every day- we or atleast I felt extremely lucky and special just to be out here in the open breeze watching these lovely creatures)

On the way home offcourse, all sane human beings were inside deck, with coffee and cosiness.We got to lie out on the front deck of the boat, alone myself and Molly- and the sea.(and the wonderfully wicked whistling wind) It was such a nice breether from our work routines and enjoying the weekend sun!

I enjoyed my day out with Molly crusing the big waves finding these massive natural animals having a whale of a time (excuse the pun) getting on with there lifes. I would recommend it to any one!  But please remember, a jumper (it does get cold when you are going very fast on the boat), sun screen (your outside ALL day), camera AND batteries, and a very POSITIVE outlook at these are natural animals, so if you dont see them on your first guide- you are allowed another chance to go at another date for free.
